Portrait of the Month

Welcome to Portrait of the Month. Each Month I will post photographs of one of today's leading LPGA players and a brief question and answer session.

October, 2005 Portrait:
LPGA Player Christina Kim

Christina Kim

At 21 years old Christina Kim has already won her first LPGA event, recorded a hole in one during an LPGA event and captured a career low of "62".

Here are just a few things you might find interesting about this very colorful LPGA player.

Rich: There are six "Kims" currently on tour.  How do you try to stand out from the rest of the pack besides the colorful Kangol hats?

Christina:   Well, in all honesty, I don't try to do anything to "separate" myself from the other Kims, as people may say.  I just do what I do to be me. I like to wear the Kangol hats and colorful outfit because I like to portray who I am internally on an external level. But to answer your question, I try to avoid giving away my fashion secrets. (wink)

Christina:  There are no words that can be used to describe the experience I went through during the Solheim Cup.  Everything about that week just made me feel like I was on top of the world. All of my senses were heightened, and my every move felt like it was taken with a purpose.

Rich: What was it like having Nancy Lopez as your team captain during the Solheim Cup?

Christina:  There was no greater feeling than to know that I was part of a winning team, representing the whole nation of the United States of America, and having been led by one of the absolute greatest players of all time, Nancy Lopez. She has this aura about her that just seems to envelope you in a blanket of calm, and yet her encouraging words cleared the fog surrounding me, showing me the path to take to victory. She's funny, brilliant, and just a beautiful human being, something I would never know about her if she had not been the team captain.

Rich:  Take us through a travel day. Are you flying private jets yet?

Christina:  Hahahaaa...Nonono, no private jets yet.  I upgraded my car from a big conversion van to a 2005 Cadillac Escalade ESV that I travel with a good part of the year.  I fly commercially whenever the drive between tournaments exceeds 9 hours.  Maybe someday I'll be able to have a jet...maybe someday...

Rich: You seem to really enjoy yourself during the pro am events.  Is there a trick to that or do you really enjoy these events?

Christina:  I was always taught by my parents to appreciate everything that I have and every opportunity that comes my way. To me, pro ams are just a small way for the LPGA to personally thank all of the sponsors and the people involved with the tournaments that have put in so much time, money, and effort to host a tournament. This is a way for me to open the doors to MY "office" and entertain those that support ladies' golf. Besides, how could I not have fun out there, its a GOLF COURSE!!!
